LIE DETECTOR TEST:
An Effective Pre-Employment Screening Technique
By: Melvin R. Royo
Nowadays, people have been fascinated about the Polygraph Test, also known as the “Lie Detector Test.” A huge number of businessmen, entrepreneurs and executives are likewise mesmerized with the use of this powerful instrument. In fact, most of the best-managed companies use the Lie Detector as one of the modern techniques in making decisions with regards to screening their applicants. This technique has been considered as a strong deterrent for future wrongdoings in the company.
In the US, the Lie Detector Test is widely used by the CIA, FBI, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and best-managed companies for Pre-employment Screening, Periodic Audit, Pair Testing Investigation and Specific Case Investigation.
On the other hand, in the Philippines, many people think that a Lie Detector Test is only used in solving a crime or in determining a perpetrator of an offense. This type of test is already conducted after an offense or crime has been committed in order to shed light on the case. Likewise, it is used to detect the guilty and exonerate the innocent. This type of test is called a “Specific Case” Investigation. Meanwhile, the “Periodic Clearance/Audit” is a test that is conducted to reassess the present employees as well as to determine their honesty and loyalty to the company. This also checks if the employees have already engaged in any wrongdoing in the company.
In the last few years, these two lie detector techniques have been widely used by most of the multinational companies. It seems that the employers have forgotten the “first line of defense” which is to protect the company from hiring undesirable workers though a comprehensive hiring process. Apparently, the employers have taken for granted the use of the “Lie Detector Test” in screening their applicants.
The “Pre-Employment Lie Detector Test” has been proven to be a very effective tool in screening applicants especially when the position to be filled up in the company requires a high degree of honesty and integrity, where honesty and confidence are vested on the occupant of the position and when immediate information about the job applicant is needed. This technique is also used to know the problems of the applicants that might interfere with the job as well as to help the company in determining the veracity of the information provided by the applicants.
Rosario Dumlao Nulud, Chief Executive Officer of Truth Verifier Systems, Inc. (TVSI), said that based on their ISO Surveillance Audit last August of this year, the number of “Pre-Employment” Lie Detector Tests has deliberately increased. Most of their clients who have been availing the “Specific Case Investigation” and the “Periodic Clearance/Audit” are now utilizing the Lie Detector Test as their basis for screening their applicants. Their clients found out that they had been lenient with the process of hiring employees, thereby; rampant wrongdoings in their companies had equally proliferated as their business expanded. Hence, they came up with an approach in order to screen their applicants scrupulously – the use of the “Lie Detector Pre-Employment Screening.”
Nulud added that their clients had attested that the Lie Detector Test really helped their companies solved corporate fraud and dishonesty. It also helped them to deter employees from committing activities inimical to the company and minimized their losses brought by fraud, internal theft and/or other forms of illegal activities.
